CHALLENGES

The planet is our support system that provides us with clean air, climate regulation, fresh water, food and other ecosystem services vital for our survival. Increasing production and consumption of goods and services including the raw materials, water and energy embodied in them have the potential to impact our fragile natural environment. We need to harness innovation to combat pollution and conserve and restore natural resources better, faster and cheaper.

We have identified three challenges where technological innovation could make a significant impact to help us protect the environment by preventing, reducing or eliminating pollution and manage resources by preserving and maintaining the stock of natural resources and safeguarding them against depletion.

Clean Energy

Transform the way we produce, distribute and consume energy to reduce its carbon and energy intensity.

This challenge focuses on developing innovative technologies, products, and services that prevent and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from high-impact sectors such as electricity and water production and consumption in utilities and buildings; oil and gas extraction and processing; manufacturing, and transportation.

Ocean Conservation

Transform the way we interact with the oceans to protect and restore the resilience and ecological integrity of coastal and marine ecosystems.

This challenge focuses on developing innovative technologies, products, and services that protect and conserve coastal and marine biodiversity from marine pollution, ocean acidification, over-fishing and invasive species from high-impact sectors such as industry, desalinated water production, fisheries and aquaculture, and shipping and dredging.

Single-Use Plastics

Transform the way we design, produce, distribute, consume and dispose of single-use plastics to reduce terrestrial and marine plastic litter.

This challenge focuses on developing innovative technologies, products, and services that protect coastal and marine biodiversity from single-use plastics pollution by reducing plastic litter along the whole product life cycle: material and product design and manufacturing, consumption and disposal, waste treatment and waste clean-up.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for monetary and in-kind awards, you should meet the following criteria:

  1. An individual, an organization or a startup anywhere in the world.
  2. Innovative idea or technology that addresses the challenges.
  3. Review the TIP ENVIROTECH courses to complete your application.

TIP Envirotech is composed of three categories. You should choose the one that appeals to you and your aims:

  1. Patent: Protect your intellectual property.
  2. Proof of concept: Develop your proof of concept into a working prototype.
  3. Startup: Turn your invention into a marketable product.

A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention. It provides the patent owner with the right to decide how – or whether – the invention can be used by others.

The idea should fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Technology-Based.
  2. It has to be Inventive.
  3. It has to be a novel.
  4. It has to be the environment and enviro-tech related.
  5. It has not been disclosed to the public.

Subject Matters which aren’t patentable are Plant varieties, animal species, biological methods of producing plants and animals Diagnostic methods, treatments and surgical operations needed for humans and animals Scientific and mathematical principles discoveries and methods Invention that may lead to a violation of the public order or morals. Guides, rules or methods followed to conduct business or perform mental activities or play games Applications that are not augmented applications

Any global participant, commercial organization, academic institution and government organization with a environment innovative: You need to provide evidence of:

  1. Ownership of the environment project.
  2. Prototype in Technology Readiness Level (TRL) stage of 5 or higher is a plus.
  3. The right to commercialize the project.
  4. The right to disclose information in respect of the project.

The participant with ideas that are not patentable may apply for a proof concept. These ideas may include:

  1. Lack of novelty.
  2. Obviousness.
  3. Lack of industrial applicability.
  4. Cannot be patented.

You should also proceed with a proof of concept if you already have a patent and want to turn your project on paper into a tangible, usable device, concept or technology.

If you are a startup you should fulfill the following criteria:

  1. An innovative environment & enviro-tech idea.
  2. A technology-based company.
  3. It is preferably established in the market between 1-2 years.
  4. Has obtained a patent or run a POC.
