Join Us In Creating A Global Impact In Energy

In line with the UAE 2021 Vision and the National Innovation Strategy, the Ministry of Economy has partnered up with the Department of Economic Development, Abu Dhabi, to accelerate the development of innovation in the United Arab Emirates.

Together they have launched Technology Innovation Pioneers (TIP) for the aim of supporting the UAE innovation strategy and accelerating the improvement of the UAE ranking within the Global Innovation Index by increasing patent filing and grants and increasing technology development & implementation within the following sectors.

Under the umbrella of TIP, the Department of Economic Development has partnered with the Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi to launch TIP EnergyTech to address selected Energy challenges through innovative technologies, products, and services.

CHALLENGES

Join one of the leading Energy-Tech award competition in the Mena region.
To spur innovation in the energy and technology sector, we are looking for the best
innovative solutions in the fields of Energy Storage, Energy Efficiency, Water
Efficiency, Demand Response, Water Desalination and Anti-Corrosion.

Smart Infrastructure

This challenge focuses on the transport of energy and water through networks, and in enhancing the whole Infrastructure. Challenges that require innovative solutions include: welding of HDPE pipes, zinc removal from biosolids, leakage detection in underground water networks. In addition to any idea that can enhance the different elements of the Infrastructure, including corrosionprevention and etc…

The use of IOT, data capture & analysis, and AI to improve maintenance and reduce losses would support this challenge.

Waste Control

Reduce the impact of waste from effluent, energy and water processes, through improved treatment and re-use of by-products. This challenge highlights innovation in waste water treatment and desalination, to reduce volumes and concentrations or find alternative uses in agriculture, energy from biomass and construction materials. Novel products and services may succeed by improving use of waste from seawater RO, waste water treatment and brine from desalination.

Efficiency and Sustainability

We need to develop the right mindset, behaviors, and culture that will lead end-users to reduce the energy and water consumption, while we keep maintaining the ability to create the balance between supply and demand of power considering time of the day and seasons.

Innovations may focus on identifying efficient and effective solution in renewable energy solution, demand shifting, cooling systems, energy storage, IOT, and Intelligent devices

Water Desalination Technologies

As the worldwide population increases and the sources of high quality, fresh drinking water decreases, so using desalination processes to provide freshwater becomes more challenging.
This challenge focusses on innovative and scalable solutions that deliver cost-competitive clean water, transform the produced water from a waste to a resource, reduce the freshwater use, water supply forecasting and management solutions and any other breakthrough solutions that significantly improves the efficiency and effectiveness in water desalination.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for monetary and in-kind awards, you should meet the following criteria:

  1. An individual, an organization or a startup anywhere in the world.
  2. Innovative idea or technology that addresses the challenges.
  3. Review the TIP ENERGYTECH courses to complete your application.

TIP Energytech is composed of three categories. You should choose the one that appeals to you and your aims:

  1. Patent: Protect your intellectual property.
  2. Proof of concept: Develop your proof of concept into a working prototype.
  3. Startup: Turn your invention into a marketable product.

A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention. It provides the patent owner with the right to decide how – or whether – the invention can be used by others.

The idea should fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Technology-Based.
  2. It has to be Inventive.
  3. It has to be a novel.
  4. It has to be the energy and energy-tech related.
  5. It has not been disclosed to the public.

Subject Matters which aren’t patentable are Plant varieties, animal species, biological methods of producing plants and animals Diagnostic methods, treatments and surgical operations needed for humans and animals Scientific and mathematical principles discoveries and methods Invention that may lead to a violation of the public order or morals. Guides, rules or methods followed to conduct business or perform mental activities or play games Applications that are not augmented applications

Any global participant, commercial organization, academic institution and government organization with a energytech innovative: You need to provide evidence of:

  1. Ownership of the energytech project.
  2. Prototype in Technology Readiness Level (TRL) stage of 5 or higher is a plus.
  3. The right to commercialize the project.
  4. The right to disclose information in respect of the project.

The participant with ideas that are not patentable may apply for a proof concept. These ideas may include:

  1. Lack of novelty.
  2. Obviousness.
  3. Lack of industrial applicability.
  4. Cannot be patented.

You should also proceed with a proof of concept if you already have a patent and want to turn your project on paper into a tangible, usable device, concept or technology.

If you are a startup you should fulfill the following criteria:

  1. An innovative energy & energy tech idea.
  2. A technology-based company.
  3. It is preferably established in the market between 1-2 years.
  4. Has obtained a patent or run a POC.
